Need Road Trip Entertainment Ideas Please!

We are going on a very long road trip this summer. We will definitely be bringing along plenty of movies for the kids (ages 9, 7, and 3), books, travel games. etc. But I'm looking for some fresh, new ideas for road trip entertainment.

Help me out folks....PLEASE! Do you have any road trip boredom busters that you've heard about or used yourself? What works for you?

  1. What about surpising the older ones with a journaling book. They can document thier trip with drawing pictures and writing. Maybe give them a disposable camera, too?

  2. Take along a roll of quarters and a list of things for the kids to spot (like a brown horse or the letter "Z") along the way. The first one to spot it gets a quarter. The kids will then have a little change to spend and they will see the country, not just sit through it!

  3. When we take a long road trip I will make a brown bag surpise. I will make 3-4 depending on the length of the trip. Each one will have a craft or something fun to do. Each time we stop I give them each one bag. My kids love it!
I have done foil for them to create art with. A disposiable camera with a list of things they need too find and take a picture of. stickers. You can really do anything!!!!

  5. Wrap up a present really tight with lots and lots of paper and tape; make them work for it. We've gotten small little pizza boxes from a pizza place for each of the boys to take, and they keep a few little cars and crayons in them. They decorate it with roads, etc. We threw them away before the trip home because we were "full" by then. My kids love taking a wipey and "cleaning" up everything they can reach while sitting in the car. My kids favorite "game/toy" for the car is their magnetic pattern blocks and patterns.

  6. When I was little we had a 50mile gift box, every time we went 50 miled we got to pick a wrapped gift out of the box. It was not big thing maybe gum or a small toy, but it made the trip go by fast. She also made each one of us (by the way there were 6 kids) us a 50 mile chart. Every 50 miles we got to put a sticker on the chart. So if we wanted to know when we could stop she would say when you fill up two boxes we will stop and get out for a few minuetes. It really helped and now we do this for our children. When we go on trips its usually home which is 950 away and yep, we drive. We now do both activities and the kids love it!
